The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responded sharply to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi after he questioned the panel responsible for selecting the Chief Election Commissioner. BJP claimed that during the UPA government, Prime Ministers themselves directly appointed Election Commissioners.
Speaking during a debate on electoral reforms in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi argued that he has no real say on the committee, which includes the Prime Minister, a Union Minister, and the Lok Sabha LoP. He wondered why the central government was “so keen on deciding exactly who the Election Commissioner will be.”
Countering this, the BJP posted on X accusing Rahul Gandhi of engaging in “drama” instead of contributing constructively to the committee’s work. The party further alleged that former CECs Navin Chawla and V.S. Sampath were directly appointed by the Congress.
